Product Review – Owl Punch

Two Step Owl Punch

The Two Step Owl Punch (#118074 $33.95) is a very versatile punch. Not only does it punch out a cute little owl but it has many other uses – so you really get about 10 punches in one! Here are some examples of punch art you can make using the Owl Punch:

  • Tulip Flower
  • Girls head with long hair
  • Monsters
  • Penguin
  • Ghost
  • Bat
  • Flowers
  • Pig

You can also “dress up” your owls in different costumes for different occasions – such as graduations, doctors, bride & groom – the possibilities are endless.

Sale-a-Bration Punch Bunch Owl

The Punch Bunch stamp set from the Sale-a-bration promotion co-ordinates perfectly with the Owl Punch – so why not place a $100 order during the Sale-a-Bration promotion and receive the stamp set for free!

The many small circles in the punch let you choose the type of eyes you would like your owl to have – small or really big! There is also a heart in the punch that can be used with your owl (or just punch out the heart!). The owl looks very cute when punched out in Designer Series Paper – punch out a couple of owls from different sheets of your Designer Series Paper and then piece the owl together using different patterns on the paper. Don’t forget to use Stampin’ Dimensionals to stick your owl together – they help to add dimension and movement to your project.

Craft Storage – what works for me!

I am often asked how I store all my Stampin’ Up goodies, so I thought I would share some of my storage ideas with you.

  • Try different storage ideas to find what works for you, what will fit in your craft space and what is within your budget! I have tried a couple of different storage ideas for most of my supplies over the last 3 years before I found an idea that worked for me!
  • Ink Pad Storage – I swear by the Stampin’ Up! Color Caddy for storing all my ink pads. It holds 48 ink pads & re-inker bottles and has an optional extender for an additional 12 ink pads. It rotates, which makes selecting the right ink colour a breeze and has a carry handle so you can move it to where you are crafting with ease!
  • Paper – I store all my A4 paper in clear plastic drawer units. Each unit has 5 drawers and I have 12 drawer units in total. This means I have one clear drawer per Stampin’ Up! colour and some left over for the Basic range of papers as well! The front of each drawer has a colour sample of the paper inside so you can quickly tell which colour is in which drawer. Each drawer is also labelled with the name of the colour. I used the 1/2″ circle punch for my colour samples!
  • Ribbon – there are many different ribbon organisers out there. I recommend one that holds the spools of ribbon (which will keep your ribbon in good condition!). I use a long ribbon tray to store my ribbon which is attached to the front of the shelving unit that holds all my craft supplies.
  • Embellishments – I use the Stampin’ Up! Stack and Store for all my brads, buttons and other bits and pieces. It fits the round plastic containers that all your Stampin’ Up! embellishments come in. It also rotates for easy access and has a carry handle.
  • Stamps – the clear mount stamps are stored in DVD cases – so a DVD storage rack is perfect for these! The wood mount stamps are a little bulkier. My stamps sets are sorted into the size of the stamp set case and then stored in alphabetical order.
  • Punches – this is always a difficult one. The new Stampin’ Up! punch style is easy to store as they can be stacked on top of each other as the punches lock flat. If like me, you have a lot of the older black style of Stampin’ Up! punches, the best way I have seen of storing these is on racks on a wall. I have seen towel racks used for this purpose – you sit the punch on the rack so the rack sits between the 2 parts of the punch handle. I am currently a little short on craft storage space, so I don’t have the luxury of storing my punches like this at the moment. Instead I have some baskets (about 10cm x 20cm) which fit 6 large punches in each. You can then stack the baskets.

I recommend that you organise your craft supplies so that like lives with like – so all your tools and supplies for one techniques live together. For example I store my embossing powders, powder trays & heat gun in the same place. You should also invest in a labelling machine – the labels help you to quickly and easily see what is stored in the box or drawer.

A lot of my items are stored in A4 boxes (try ebay or stationery stores such as Officeworks) which means you can transport them easily. This is very handy if your storage area is away from where you craft, or if you are going to a friends house – you can just pick up the one box with all your embossing tools and you have everything you need!

I also find that cube storage units work well for craft storage. If you make sure the cube is at least 12″ x 12″ you will be able to store your scrapbooking paper. Cubes are perfect for stacking up Big Shot dies, stamp sets and just about anything else you have in your craft stash!

Circle Scissor Plus – a project you can make…

Earlier this month I reviewed the Circle Scissor Plus – the ultimate tool for cutting circles. Click here to see the review.

Circle Scissor Plus Album Cover

As promised in the review, here is an Off the Page Scrapbooking project I made using the Circle Scissor Plus – a round album for a recent holiday I took in Broome, Western Australia.

I used a Simply Scrappin’ Kit called Sunny Day that was available in a Mini Catalogue last year. Although this particular kit is no longer available, there are many other Simply Scrappin’ Kits you can use to create an album like this. The Island Oasis Designer Series Paper in the Summer Mini Catalogue is very similar to the kit I used and would make a fantastic substitute!

I have used the Island Floral Bigz Die for the Big Shot Machine for the flowers – I hope you like them!

Tuesday Tool Tip – Scissors

Scissors

If I had to pick the tool I use the most, it would probably be scissors! Here are some tips to extend the life out of your scissors!

Do’s

  • Clean them regularly – I use Eucalyptus Oil. I find it really gets the sticky residue from adhesives off your scissors. You can also use an adhesive remover (sort of like an eraser) to clean your scissors.
  • Have a couple of pairs of scissors – one for paper, one for everything else (including adhesives / sticky stuff) and a larger pair of rubber or general purpose scissors for bigger things.
  • Always store your scissors with the blades closed together – this will stop the scissors, you and your family from coming to any harm.
  • If your scissors come with a protective sleeve, store them in the sleeve – they will stay cleaner and be less likely to suffer damage.

Dont’s

  • Let the family use your scissors for anything!
  • Cut anything too thick – if it too hard to use the scissors on what you are trying to cut, it is probably too thick for the scissors.
  • Don’t cut wire or other items that may take a chuck out of the blade of your scissors – use craft snips / pliers instead.
  • Apply too much force when cutting – or you will blunt your scissors very quickly!

Stampin’ Up! have 3 different types of scissors available:

  • Paper Snips – perfect for paper!
  • Craft & Paper Scissors – perfect for ribbon, paper and much more. Have a larger blade then the Paper Snips
  • Craft & Rubber Scissors – short bladed craft scissors for heavy duty cutting (including rubber for assembling stamps)

Your voice is like music from above
My ears love to hear the sound of your voice so dear.
My ears hear only you.

How to Properly Light a Photo

Article from www.ehow.com

Proper lighting is one of the most crucial elements of a good picture, yet is one of the most commonly overlooked. Follow these simple steps to make sure your pics impress.

Step 1 -
Determine the “dominant light source.” An easy way to do this is to look at the shadows in the area – they will point away from the dominant light source. If there are multiple light sources, the dominant one will create the darkest shadows.

Step 2 -
Decide what type of shot you’re after. Usually you’ll be wanting a fully-lit shot of your subject with as little shadow as possible.

Step 3 -
If you’re going for a normal, well-lit photo, shoot away from the light source. This will eliminate harsh shadows and make sure your subject is lit up in your pic.

Other Tips -

  • Don’t rely on the flash! Most digital cameras have an automatic flash that’s there to “fill” in bad lighting situations. Problem is, it’s usually a pretty harsh light, and can wind up reflecting off your subject and making them look washed out. If there’s enough light in the area and you’re following these steps, turn the flash off!
  • If you’re outside during the day, the dominant light source is easy to find – not much is going to outshine that big light in the sky. Shoot away from the sun whenever possible.
  • Don’t stifle your creativity. Odds are you’ve got over a hundred shots to waste on that camera of yours – use them. This is simply how to properly light a photo – sometimes improper shots can accidentally wow everyone with your artistic ability!
